Are things going a little too far?

I'm not sure, but I think that some people are going overboard with the cleaning up of the media. The host of American Idol has caused a bit of trouble by "accidentally" flipping off the camera. Here's the pic and the quote:

"I certainly would never make a gesture like that toward Paula or on national television," Cowell said. "Sometimes I lean on my index finger. Sometimes a different finger. Sometimes two at the same time, or, God help me, even the whole hand. I never even thought about it until now."

Are people starting to get worked up over nothing? Are they simply on a noble quest to save us from the depravity of the media?

I don't know the answer. What do you think?

Sex and Violence in the Media

What's worse, sex in the media or violence in the media? Is that even a fair question? This article on Philly.com deals with the issue and makes some interesting points. Here are the highlights:

"...more than 100 studies conducted over 30 years, identified four ways in which media violence affects children. It makes them believe the world is a mean and violent place. It causes some kids to act aggressively toward others. It teaches that violence is an acceptable way to deal with conflict. And it desensitizes kids to the use of violence in the real world."

"...televised violence hurts human character and attitudes; promotes violent behavior; influences moral and social values about violence in daily life; and often results in a perception of a nastier world and an exaggerated probability of being a victim of violence."

"No comparable data show such or other ill effects of porn on minors. No data even come close."

The author of the article makes a good point about public attitudes toward sex as opposed to those we have toward violence. We seem to have an admiration of violence, while sex is something to be ashamed of. This is reflected in the fact that so much energy is being focused on dealing with "indecency" in the media, but nothing is said about violence.

Stern Feels Bush-Whacked End Is Near

http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=20252

Check out this link. It's an article about Howard Stern and the things we were talking about in class. The thing I find most interesting is how media, money, culture and politics intersect. I'm surprised to find out that Stern used to be a Bush supporter. Check out the article and comment. I would like to know what everyone thinks about this.
